Teaching & Mentoring

Dr. Erving is an award-winning teacher. She works strategically to make course materials relevant in ways that support students in developing their sociological imagination. Importantly, she strives to make her classroom a brave and accessible space where students are intellectually challenged and supported in a range of learning styles.

Her teaching experience ranges across various higher educational contexts including the University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Erving has also given guest lectures at Oxford College of Emory University and Eastern Michigan University.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Erving considers mentoring and collaborating with students as one of the most enjoyable aspects of her career. Her collaborations with undergraduate and graduate students have led to several research publications and many of her mentees have advanced in their careers as postdoctoral fellows and tenure-track faculty.
